End of Gabbatoir -: Victory for life and Cricket

19.01.2021, a normal day for people but cricket lovers like me, who woke up at sharp 5 A.m. in morning to watch India saving this match to level the Border-Gavaskar Series, but got under the bed soon after 8.2 overs as  Rohit Sharma (3rd most experienced player in the team) edged to world no. 1 test bowler Pat Cummins. It was a moment to just pray for India to not succumb to the pressure of Day 5 of this decider, to the pressure of trinity of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazelwood and Mitchell Starc with mighty Lyon. However, to get up again at 7 and sneaking through my phone to watch Shubman Gill marching fearlessly into his 60's with Pujara in his own natural mood to defend made again all plans for the day on side and just to watch what wasn't expected although dreamt of.

This Indian team earlier in the previous match had shown the character but with Ashwin, Shami, Umesh, Bumrah out and Sundar, Natrajan, Shardul and Navdeep in was pretty much an underdog team against the mighty Australians at their home stadium touted popularly as Gabba Fortress, where last time only in 1988 Australia was defeated, and this is why also India today became the first Asian side to win a test match at Gabba. In these times of new normal i.e. Bio-bubble cricket what Indian team did was no normal, It was significant and top seed cricket from a side playing altogether 226 test matches ( 184 between Rahane, Rohit and Pujara) against the home side which played more than 500 matches.

This was a team which faced unsurmountable pressure and backlash from cricket world after stumbling for 36 in the first test match, however, it is also a team where the new captain Rahane led his side scoring an important ton in the 2nd match so as to make  bounce his team to win at Melbourne. This was also a team of young lads like Mohd. Siraj who only in his 2nd test match faced racial abuse from the crowd twice, but his teammates in likes of Ashwin and Vihari forged a strong and resolute partnership of 62 runs off 289 deliveries with both of them standing after heavy dosage of painkillers to sustain hard injuries. Then, here at Gabba, with our bowling attack sharing 8 wickets between them against an experienced and world's best bowling line up sharing almost 1000 wickets, still was able to send the whole 10 players to dougout twice was nothing short of massive hard effort led miracle, with Siraj leading the attack grabbing a 5-for in last innings shredding away all those stupid racist abuse. India won this match very much because of youngistan of W. Sundar, S. Thakur, M.Siraj alongwith experienced stiff defence by C. Pujara.

Now, to those who don't love cricket much, Gabba test hold much stuff for them too in form of the inspiration these young players proved to bestow generally as in a culture of cricket where you get many to say that "Its money and source you need to play in next match/level", players like Siraj, Natrajan, Sundar, Thakur and Saini (Youngistan) made their way to the highest level possible for any Indian Player, more bravely as they faced only setbacks, poverty, neglect, negativity of life. To court their valour in words is a li'l bit tough but to -:

  • 1) Natrajan befor venturing in IPL wasn't even able to buy shoes for himself and also he hasn't seen his newborn son  as after playing IPL in UAE, he straightaway went to Australia in a bio-bubble.
  • 2) Shardul battled obesity to make way into the team.
  • 3)Siraj rose to become India's new ball bowler despite being born to a poor rickshaw driver (Father) who even died just before the 1st test match but Siraj chose to stay back in Australia to complete his and his father's dream of playing for nation in red ball cricket.
  • 4) Sundar again another lad from a middle class family made way to this level.
  • 5) Navdeep Saini's father was driver who couldn't afford his son a cricket coaching, hence Saini played exhibition matches on tennis ball at Rs. 300 to fund his dreams.

This was all inspiration for a team which has conquered a historic win to give a motto of life -:

" Its not end of the story, let no one ever write you off, bounce back hard and always value those who stand by you and believe in you ".

At the end of this wonderful day for India and test cricket, Harsha Bhogle's words aptly sums up the effort -:
"

India's winning team deserves a book written about them".

Salute to the whole Indian team.
